Can you get financial support in Singapore? How?
In
Singapore, any women is entitled to
apply under the Women’s Charter (Section 69)
for reasonable maintenance from her
husband. Maintenance refers to financial
support and it can be a one-time sum or a monthly sum. An experienced divorce lawyer will be able to advise you on how to get
maintenance, on a case by case basis.
What about the Husband?
Currently under the Singapore Law, the husband cannot apply for maintenance for himself from his wife. He can
however, apply for maintenance for the child from his wife.
Will there be any changes to this law?
In July 2014, the Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun
Sing announced that the Women’s Charter was likely to be reviewed in 2015 to
ensure that spousal maintenance is based on need, not gender. This move aims to
help the minority of men who are financially worse off than the women they were
married to. However, no significant changes have been made.
When can I get maintenance?
Maintenance orders can be made during the marriage or in pending divorce
proceedings as part of the final orders in ancillary matters in divorce
proceedings. Our lawyers will be able gauge the different circumstances of
every individual and advise them accordingly.
When can I stop giving maintenance/until when can
I continue receiving maintenance?
The maintenance orders continues unless revoked by another Court Order or changes are made to it by another
Court Order, until the death of the
husband or the wife, whichever is earlier or upon the wife remarrying. However, there are special circumstances in which
maintenance orders can be revoked. Contact Singapore Divorce Lawyers to find out more.
